"John lyall and our fans had the benefit of keeping Brooking, Alvin, Bonds, Lampard and Cross when we got relegated.

Somehow I doubt we would be keeping Antonio, Carroll, Lanzini and Reid if we got relegated this season."

I see what you mean, but the very idea of comparing the former to the latter makes me want to jump off a bridge.

Lyall my favourite too, what football we played at times under him in a seething cauldron called Upton Park Great Days

Re: When we were relegated under lyall in 78 what was fan reaction like
At the time sticking with your manager was seen as the thing to do United kept faith with Doherty in 74 and Spurs stuck with Burkinshaw in 77 when they were relegated.
In fairness to the West Ham board when Lyall went he was beginning to come across like a man out of time.
We were desperately short of fire power and he spent the entire season trying to persuade Kerry Dixon to sign from Chelsea only to eventually realise he was having the hand taken out of him when Dixon signed a new contract.
The days of Gentleman John were over

Is it true that ince was a bit of a tearaway and john lyall took him in and basically fathered him?

I remember finding out about Lyall being sacked..

Terry Wogan was talking to Billy Graham who was to do a sermon at Upton Park. Graham said he had heard that West Ham needed some divine assistance. Wogan replied that 'certainly the manager does because he's just been sacked'..
Lyall's face was on the calendar that month too, just to add to the poignancy of the moment.
Then Ince kicked off and started a drama that dragged on through the off season where every day he switched from going to staying. By the start of the next season, we just wanted to see him fuck off from the club.
And so ended a long period of stability where we didn't sack managers.

I'm sure Paul Ince once said that the clubs' treatment of Lyall was one of the reasons he fucked us off/over?

Football was different in those days you could go down and still keep your best players. Bonds, Brooking, Devonshire, Lampard etc. Indeed the following season we broke the world record fee for a goal keeper when we signed Phil Parkes, that would never happen now.

John Lyall is the best manager we have ever had and probably the best we will ever have. West Ham fans never called for his head in 1978 because he was a great manager. In my opinion he should never have been sacked ten years later when he was. The board should have put him upstairs like Greenwood and brought in Bonds under him. Lyall always looked up to Greenwood as his Father figure, Lyall and Bonds could have been the same.

Lyall is my favourite ever West Ham manager but let's not forget he also signed a lot of old shit.

Allan McKnight, David Kelly, Tommy McQueen and Gary Strodder to name but a few.

Even the best get it wrong sometimes.

Re: When we were relegated under lyall in 78 what was fan reaction like
It was disappointing but I remember everyone sticking together - supporters and players - none of the histrionics of the little proms Donna wankers of today - the attitutude of the players was to get get back to Div 1 ASAP none of our stars Brooking Bonds Holland Kamoard etc wanted to leave - I remember our first home game of Div 2 we were 4-0 up in 20 mins against Notts County - that was the first season I went to every home game and plenty of aways . In fact the team was strengthened!
No doom and gloom we just got on with it - and we were a big scalp back in the day in that Division ⚒⚒⚒
